FAQs
1 / What is speed dating?
Speed dating is an organized event where participants meet and chat with a series of potential partners in short, timed sessions. At the end of each session you tick one of the three boxes on your ‘score’ sheet (Romance/Friendship/Not For Me) and you then hand this sheet to either Vanessa or Nigel at the end of the event. If there was mutual interest, contact information will be shared to enable you both to explore a potential connection.
2 / How does speed dating work?
Attendees are assigned a name badge, and the event is structured so that each person will meet and talk to every other participant for a set amount of time, usually 4 minutes. When the time is up, a signal is given, and participants move to the next person.
3 / How long do speed dating sessions last?
Answer: Each one-on-one session generally lasts 4 minutes. The short time keeps things light and fast-paced, allowing participants to get a sense of whether they feel a connection without feeling overwhelmed.
4 / What should I wear to a speed dating event?
It’s important to dress in a way that makes you feel confident and comfortable, while also looking presentable. Casual chic or smart casual attire is usually a good choice—something that’s stylish but not overly formal or revealing.
5 / Do I have to prepare anything?
Not really! Just come prepared to have fun and be yourself. You
don’t need a script or specific questions, but having a few conversation starters in mind can help keep things flowing. It’s good to think about what you’re looking for, but the most important thing is to be genuine. If you need any ideas regarding questions, please see our Some Useful Questions
page.
6 / Is it okay to talk about personal topics?
Speed dating is a great opportunity to learn about someone’s
interests, hobbies, and values. While deep personal topics (like past relationships or financial matters) might be saved for later conversations, light personal topics are okay. Try to keep things fun and positive!
7 / Will I be matched with everyone I meet?
No, not everyone will necessarily be a match. You will have
indicated who you were interested in, and if both people express interest in each other, you’re matched. If there’s no mutual interest, no match will be made.
8 / What happens if I don’t feel a connection with anyone?
That’s totally okay! Not every connection will be a perfect fit, and
part of the fun of speed dating is meeting new people, even if there’s no romantic spark. Think of it as a way to practice conversation skills and expand your social circle.
9 / What should I do if I’m nervous?
It’s completely normal to feel nervous! Everyone is in the same boat, and the goal is to have fun and enjoy the experience. Focus on being yourself, ask light questions, and remember it’s just a short conversation, so there’s no need to put too much pressure on it.
10 / How do I know if someone is interested in me?
Body language can often give clues. If someone is making eye
contact, smiling, and actively engaging in the conversation, it’s usually a good sign.
11 / What if I want to see someone again after the event?
If you’d like to connect with someone after the event, you’ll have
marked them as a match. If they also select you as a match, Vanessa or Nigel will provide both of you with each other’s contact information (usually via email). From there, you can arrange a second date or continue the conversation.
12 / Is there an age limit for speed dating?
Yes, many speed dating events are organized around specific age ranges (e.g., 20-30, 30-40, 50+ etc.). Check the event details beforehand to make sure it’s within your age range, but age groups are typically clearly defined when you register.
14 / How do I sign up for a speed dating event?
You sign up through our website. You’ll need to provide some basic information (like your name, age, and contact details), and to pay a fee to attend the event.
15 / What’s the difference between speed dating and online dating?
Speed dating allows you to meet multiple people in real life in a
short period, while online dating is based on interacting with others through text and photos via apps or websites. Speed dating provides instant face-to-face interaction, whereas online dating can involve a lot of back-and-forth messages before meeting in person or even being ghosted.
16 / What if I can’t attend after registering?
If you need to cancel more than 5 days ahead of the event, we will move your booking to the next age appropriate event. If it is less than 5 days before the event, you will forfeit your registration fee. Please try to let us know as soon as possible so that we can make arrangements for the event and let others who might want to take your spot know.
17 / How can I make the most out of a speed dating event?
Be yourself, stay open-minded, and approach each interaction with a positive attitude. Try not to stress about finding your “perfect match” right away—focus on having fun, getting to know new people, and seeing where things go.
